AI Brings Back the Dead: A Chatbot Sparks Debate by Recreating a 2006 Murder Victim
Introduction
The very controversial AI experiment has now resurrected a dead person - in a sort of electronic format, of course. An online chatbot was created, using masses of data that were gathered online about a murder victim who, three years after his murder in 2006, continues to raise many questions about privacy, consent, and the boundaries that artificial intelligence must not cross.
Rise of AI Driven Chatbots
Platform character.ai is a chatbot in which the developers were the tech firm dedicated to the subject of AI and natural processing language. Using tonnes of public data regarding the victim, such as information posted on social media, articles carried on the web, and even other digital signals, the company managed to train the AI to imitate the vocabulary, beliefs, and personal of the victim
A Very Controversial Experiment
Drew Crecente is Jennifer's dad. He found a shocking Google alert involving his daughter. From this, he was led to the character chatbot on the platform Character.ai where he discovered the AI version of Jennifer Ann using her name and a yearbook photo. This chatbot had already been in at least 69 conversations representing itself as a knowledge-gaining AI character. Since his daughter was killed for raising awareness of teenage dating violence, Drew contacted Character.ai immediately.
Data Collection and Integration
He asked them to delete the AI chatbot and to investigate how such a vicious creature came into existence. The company assured him that the problem would be sent to their complaint department, but Drew never got a word from the company afterwards. They confirmed this, though by a tweet from Drew's brother, Brian, that Drew's had been taken down for violating their impersonation policy.
Ethics Violation
Although the wonder of the chatbot has been considered to be one of the most technological creations, the very project has been criticized too much. The victim's family expressed their unhappiness and distress that the existence of this wonder was done without their permission. The family of the victim feels that because of this AI, privacy violations are being committed upon their deceased loved one while a painful chapter of their life is being opened as well.
AI and Cyber Resurrection
It has stirred up further debate over the ethics of AI. While some views suggest that the nature of the chatbot is little more than a naive tribute to the person who is deceased, others argue that this violates the right to be forgotten. In the near future, issues about consent, privacy, and boundaries of digital resurrection will become increasingly pertinent questions as AI technology advances.
Conclusion
Founded in 2021 by former Google engineers, Character.ai has made waves as it recently closed a partnership deal with Google worth $2.7 billion. I personally think incidents like these need better regulations and ethics in the development of AI.
