China has an AI that produces more jobs but with higher entry thresholds.

Artificial intelligence integration in China created a paradoxical job market

The more employment opportunities created by AI technologies, the higher the entry thresholds for most positions. This creates a trend toward higher demand for more skilled workers, who are able to navigate complex AI systems, leaving behind the lower skill sets.

This evolution has been accompanied by an industry shift toward technical work and in areas of work where highly technical skills are involved, especially in sectors like technology and manufacturing. Such shifts can be identified by the number of job postings in AI-related fields that typically call for higher education and training.

For example, the majority of AI-related job postings are focused on the economically developed areas, mainly on the Yangtze River Delta and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, where technical ability is needed.

However, although low-skilled jobs are not disappearing, the nature of those jobs is changing. Many traditional tasks are becoming automated, and jobs are becoming more focused on managing or maintaining AI systems. This shift requires a workforce that is not only flexible but also skilled in new areas to meet the needs of an AI-driven economy.

In short, the China AI boom has two sides of presenting opportunities as well as challenges. There is a creation of new jobs on one hand, but then there is a higher threshold for entry on the other hand. Thereby, this also underlines the importance of improved education and training programs that can better equip the worker in the changed scenario.
