Ex-Google CEO warns 'perfect' AI girlfriend could worsen loneliness: 'You're obsessed with her'
The former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, in a podcast interview recently revealed his concern that "perfect" AI girlfriends might make young men lonely rather than curing them of loneliness. He explained that emotionally and physically idealized AI companions would worsen the feeling of loneliness instead of relieving it. Schmidt explained that young men may fall deeply in love with these AI chatbots and thus begin to live with an unhealthy obsession where the AI becomes dominant over their thoughts and emotional well-being.
In his conversation with Scott Galloway, Schmidt mentioned that this trend could lead to severe social problems, such as increased isolation and even radicalization. He said that though AI companions may give temporary comfort, they can eventually hinder true human connections. This is especially true for younger people who are not yet emotionally mature or prepared to deal with such deep relationships with artificial beings.
Schmidt also dwelled on the wider implications that technology had on mental health, as he stated it could be harmful to more vulnerable users who have excessive access to online content and are thus exposed to possibly harmful influences. He termed for better regulations that would put users, especially minors at risk from AI technologies.
As society continues its journey in the complex interactions of AI relationships, Schmidt's warnings remind us of maintaining a balance between technological innovations and human connections.
